About Knowledge Check
What this is
Knowledge Check quizzes your raid on boss mechanics before you pull. The leader picks a boss, a difficulty and a question mode, and gets a link. Everyone opens the link, types a name, picks a role, and answers their own randomly drawn questions against a countdown. The leader watches the answers land and sees exactly who missed what.
Nobody signs up and nobody installs anything. A check lives for a day and then it is gone.
The recommended way: the whole group on the addon
This site is a web port of Knowledge Check, a World of Warcraft addon that does the same job inside the game. When the whole group has it, nothing here comes close: each player gets their own paper drawn for their role, in a popup over the game, with a countdown and an instant result, with no second screen and no extra chat at all. The addon also reads the raid roster, which is the one thing a web page cannot, so it can tell somebody who never answered from somebody who was never there.
Why leader-only is the weakest option
A check still runs with only the leader having the addon. That is what its chat fallback is for, and nobody is left out. But it is not the same check. The questions have to fit into group chat, a dozen-odd lines squeezed under the 255-character limit per message, and answering means reading them out of a scrolling chat window and whispering four letters back in the right format.
That is the gap this site fills:
| Whole group on the addon | Leader only, chat fallback | This site | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your questions | your own paper, for your role | one shared paper, no role questions | your own paper, for your role |
| Who else sees them | nobody | everyone answering in chat, and anyone reading the log | nobody |
| Answering | A/B/C/D in a popup, on a countdown | read a dozen lines of chat, then whisper four letters | A/B/C/D on your phone, on a countdown |
| Cost to the group | no extra chat | about a dozen chat lines, every check | one link |
| Second screen | no | no | yes |
So: get the addon, and get your group on it. Use this when they will not. A pug never will, which is exactly where a leader needs the tool most.
The addon stays the source of truth. The questions here are exported from its data files rather than retyped, the random draw is a byte-for-byte port of its own, and the pass rules are its rules. When the two disagree, the addon is right and this is a bug.
What is different on the web
- No roster. The addon knows who is in your raid; a web page cannot. Someone who never opens the link simply never appears, so there is no “missing addon” row to chase.
- The clock is per player. It starts when that player's questions are issued, not when the check was created. People open a link staggered, and a shared countdown would hand the last one five seconds.
- Nothing closes a check but you. The addon finalises once its roster is accounted for. Here, “everyone who joined has finished” only ever means nobody new has opened the link yet.
- You can ask for more than four questions. Two to ten, where the addon is fixed at four. At four it draws exactly the paper the addon would.
Questions people ask
- Do my raiders need to install anything?
- No. They open the link you paste in raid chat, type a name, pick a role and answer. Nothing to install and no account, on a phone or in a second window.
- Is the in-game addon better than this site?
- Yes, when the whole group has it. Everyone gets their own paper for their role in a popup over the game, on a countdown, with no second screen and no extra chat, and the addon can read the raid roster so it knows who never answered at all. Use this site for the group that will not install it.
- Does everybody get the same questions?
- No. Each player draws their own paper from the pools for their role and the difficulty you picked, seeded on their name, so two people on the same check cannot copy each other.
- What is the difference between Easy and Hard mode?
- Easy asks about the same mechanics in raid vernacular and names no abilities. Hard names them. Someone who fails an Easy check does not know the fight; someone who fails a Hard one may simply not know what it is called.
- When does a player run out of time?
- Their countdown starts when their own questions are issued, not when you made the check, because people open a link staggered. Running out of time counts as a fail, exactly as it does in the addon.
- How long do a check and its results last?
- A day. The share link, the live board and the results page all expire 24 hours after the last change. Your own list of past checks outlives them and is kept in the browser you created them in.
- Which bosses can I quiz on?
- The eight bosses of The Venomous Abyss, the Midnight raid, in Normal, Heroic and Mythic. The questions are exported from the addon's own data files rather than retyped, so the two always ask the same things.
